Weekend getaway

Cincinnati residents, with Labor Day coming up, people are packing their bags and heading out to enjoy a long-awaited vacation from the everyday grind. Travel is expected to be higher this weekend than either Memorial Day or the Fourth of July. With that in mind, I would like to share one of my newly rediscovered favorite vacation spots, from a breakfast point of view: Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

A mere five hours from Cincinnati, it is one of the closest tourist attractions beyond King's Island, and it has something for everyone, from mountains and hiking to haunted houses and museums.

Downtown Gatlinburg has become a year-round carnival, touting ski lift rides, water slides, go-karts, and candy shops. But it's not all magic shows and olde tyme photos, they have also made plenty of room for breakfast houses, with more than enough cozy, novel places to try a new one each morning of your stay.

The Pancake Pantry is right in the middle of town, and it sports a large selection of pancake varieties and flavors, rivaling our own Original Pancake House. Their plain pancakes are fantastic, but I recommend the sweet potato pancakes(and anything, really, that has sweet potatoes).

Somewhat off the main strip is The Log Cabin Pancake House, which is what it sounds like, with a gift shop and ATM inside. The stand-out dish at the Cabin is their French Toast Royale, which is also available as a Pancake Royale. This amounts to a stack of already-good French toast, topped with a cream cheese sauce and bananas with what I believe to be rum. They friends I went with have contemplated planning camping trips around this breakfast.

And there are many others, like Aunt B's, Little House of Pancakes, Flapjack's Pancake Cabin, etc.

All in all, when planning a trip this weekend, take time to look at Gatlinburg, TN. Along with pancakes and fresh taffy, the city turns out good times and great memories for people of all ages.
