Weekend event offers a cool hike and habitat conservation

The weekend weather forecast for the Las Vegas Valley projects sun and temperatures in the mid-100s. Up in the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area, where volunteers for Get Outdoors Nevada will be, it's expected to be a cool 78 degrees. If you're into high-altitude hikes and habitat conservation, you might want to join them.

Get Outdoors Nevada is volunteer program of the Southern Nevada Agency Partnership (which consists of the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service). The Forest Service is coordinating a project to connect the South Loop trail to Griffith Peak.

The project includes some rehabilitation of damaged areas that are important to the habitat of the Mt. Charleston blue butterfly. This weekend, the group will hike up to the saddle between Griffith Peak and Charleston Peak, where they'll collect seeds for the plants (geek alert!) Astragalus calycosus, Erigeron clokeyi and Hymenoxys lemmonii

The event is open to people over the age of 16, and groups are welcome. In addition to getting a brisk hike and a good deed under their belts, participants will also be treated to the spectacular view from the Griffith Peak area.
