Weekend box office: trio of women take down 'Captain America'

It took a girl-powered comedy to finally knock “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” out of the number one spot at the box office, where it has sat for the last three weeks in a row. While the patriotic superhero still grossed $16.04 million, coming in second, it was beaten by the new film “The Other Woman”, which stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, and Leslie Mann as three women who team up to get back at the man who cheated on them. That movie made $24.7 million.

The action film remake “Brick Mansions” performed okay at the box office in its opening weekend, despite horrible reviews. Audiences likely sought it out because it was actor Paul Walker’s final completed film. As a result, it debuted in fifth with $9.6 million.

The horror film “The Quiet Ones” tanked, on the other hand. The found footage-inspired movie about a professor and his students who study a possessed girl—with terrifying results—likely didn’t pull off enough scares to impress horror fans. The movie opened in seventh with only $4 million.
