This weekend’s box office was one of the biggest in February ever, thanks to four big new releases. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, the romantic drama “The Vow”, starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, took the top spot with $41.7 million. The film, about a woman who forgets her husband after a car accident, likely reminded many viewers of one of the most popular romances of recent years, “The Notebook” (in which McAdams also starred).
But “Safe House”, a thriller starring two more popular stars, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, wasn’t far behind. It followed “The Vow” in second with $39.3 million. That movie in turn was followed by two big 3D movies. In third was “Journey 2: the Mysterious Island” with $27.5 million. Starring Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson, the film is loosely based on the Jules Verne novel and is a sequel to 2008’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, a cheesy but fun film for families.
Also appealing to families is “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace”. The 1999 film that brought back the “Star Wars” franchise was rereleased this weekend in 3D, and despite being the least popular film in the series, it grossed $23 million.
