Weekend box office: 'The Grey' leads pack of new releases and Oscar nominees

The R-rated survival thriller “The Grey” led the box office in what was otherwise a slow movie weekend.  The Joe Carnahan/Liam Neeson flick about a group of men who are stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with a pack of wolves on their tail opened with a respectable $20 million, far ahead of last weekend’s number one movie, “Underworld: Awakening”, which fell to number two with $12.5 million.

“One for the Money”, a Katherine Heigl action comedy based on the book by Janet Evanovich, debuted in third with $11.7 million, while another new thriller of a different sort, “Man on a Ledge”, came in fifth with $8.3 million—not bad, especially considered the horrible critical reception the film has received.

Meanwhile, in the wake of this week’s announcement of this year’s Oscar nominees, heavily nominated films like “The Descendants”, “The Artist “ and “Hugo” (which received the most nominations of any film this year) all saw a boost in box office this weekend, as they opened in more theaters and saw an increase in revenue.  “The Descendants” jumped from sixteenth to seventh with $6.55 million; “The Artist” went from seventeenth to twelfth with $3.3 million; and “Hugo”, which has been in theaters since Thanksgiving, didn’t get bumped into the top twelve, but still managed to make $2.2 million.  “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”, this year’s surprise Best Picture nominee, didn’t see an increase in box office revenue (in fact, it dropped from fourth place last weekend to sixth), but it did not see much of a decline either.
