The opening weekend of the month is one that saw one big-time opening and it was Universal's "Riddick" starring Vin Diesel. Essentially, it shouldn't have had much competition once it hit theaters on Friday, but the box office numbers as of Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, showed that it opened up rather slow and did a lot less than most were expecting.
"Riddick" was expected by most studios to finish the almost uncontested weekend at $20-25 million, but that just didn't happen. Through Friday, Saturday, and estimates for Sunday, "Riddick" pulled in a mere $18.6 million and that's not pleasing to Universal.
"Lee Daniels' The Butler" continued its success with another weekend almost in double-figures to push its total to $91.6 million. Disney's "Planes" is holding on and landed in fifth place with a $4.2 million weekend, and that helps it keep going more over budget.
It is always said that the opening weekend of September is one of the weakest of the year, and 2013 showed no difference. Box Office Mojo's full numbers for the opening weekend of September are below.
