Weekend box office: 'Non-Stop's Liam Neeson takes on a killer and the box office

This weekend, moviegoers chose a perennial favorite: Liam Neeson and an over-the-top, action-packed thriller. “Non-Stop”, a new movie that stars Neeson as an air marshal trying to find a killer on a trans-Atlantic flight, was the number one movie at the box office this weekend, taking down three-week champion “The Lego Movie”. “Non-Stop” grossed a solid $30.01 million, while “The Lego Movie” dropped to third with $21.01 million.

Coming in second was another new release, the Biblical epic “Son of God”. The film, which tells the story of Jesus from birth to resurrection, performed better than expected, almost beating out “Non-Stop” with $26.5 million.

Meanwhile, anime legend Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, “The Wind Rises”, opened in limited release in the U.S. this weekend. The critically-acclaimed Oscar nominee fell just short of making the top twelve, coming in thirteenth with $1.6 million. The extended R-rated cut of “Anchorman 2”, which is now in theaters for one week only, fell in right behind it with $1.3 million.
