Weekend box office: no one went to the movies, 'Ride Along' is number one again

With winter storms and the Super Bowl taking up most of America’s attention, this weekend was a particularly slow one at the box office. There were two new wide releases, but it was the comedy “Ride Along” that topped the box office again, for the third time in a row. The film has been a surprising success, although lack of strong competition always helps. This weekend, “Ride Along” grossed $12.3 million.

Frozen” followed second with $9.3 million. The animated Disney fairy tale received a boost this weekend after the release of a sing-along version. One of the weekend’s new releases, “That Awkward Moment”, debuted behind it in third. The romantic comedy, despite boasting a solid cast including Zac Efron, Miles Teller, and Michael B. Jordan, only made $9.01 million.

Labor Day” was the only other big new movie this weekend, and that one fared even worse. The drama starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin and directed by Jason Reitman has been hailed by many as more sappy than moving, and it debuted in seventh with a mere $5.3 million.
