Weekend box office: 'Identity Thief' steals top spot, 'Top Gun' still a hit

Identity Thief” was a huge hit at the box office this weekend, knocking down last weekend’s number one movie, the zombie rom-com “Warm Bodies”, by a long-shot. The raunchy comedy starring popular funny girl Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman wasn’t well-received by critics, but audiences obviously loved it. The film was this weekend’s top movie with $36.5m million. “Warm Bodies”, meanwhile, followed in second with $11.5 million.

Steven Soderbergh’s new thriller “Side Effects”, starring Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, and Jude Law, debuted in third with a modest $10.01 million. But one of the biggest surprises this weekend was how well the 3D release of “Top Gun” performed. The 1986 flick starring Tom Cruise is a bit of a classic, and though this new release was only playing in 300 theaters nationwide, the film still made $1.9 million, enough to crack the top 12 and prove that this movie is still very much loved.
