This weekend featured the typically average new releases one comes to expect from the month of January. Still, despite the relatively slow box office weekend there was still a clear winner. “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunter”, the gory action flick based on the classic Grimm Brothers fairy tale, was the number one movie this weekend with $19 million. Starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, the 3D movie likely brought in audiences with its unique premise and the lack of any other action movies out there.
Okay, maybe there’s not too much of a lack of action movies in theaters right now. Still, one of this weekend’s other new releases, the Jason Statham and J-Lo vehicle “Parker”, didn’t fare as well as “Hansel and Gretel”, debuting in fifth with only $7 million. Meanwhile, despite its massive cast of well-known celebrities, the comedy “Movie 43”, which is receiving some of the worst reviews of any film in years, came in seventh with $5 million.
Last weekend’s number one movie, the horror film “Mama”, dropped to second this weekend but still grossed a substantial $12.8 million.
