Weekend box office: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' easily beats new releases

Guardians of the Galaxy” handily beat this weekend’s new movies at the box office, becoming the number one movie for the second weekend in a row and the third time total. Still, this holiday weekend was a terribly slow one at the box office, with “Guardians” leading with only $16.3 million—roughly the same amount it grossed last weekend. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” remained in second with $11.7 million.

As Above, So Below” performed the best out of this weekend’s new releases. The horror film set in the catacombs below Paris debuted in fourth with $8.3 million. The action thriller “The November Man”, starring Pierce Brosnan as a retired CIA agent called back into action, came in sixth with only $7.6 million.

Perhaps the most successful movie this weekend was “Cantinflas”. The film, which tells the story of one of Mexico’s greatest comedy stars, opened in less than 400 theaters nationwide this weekend, but still grossed a whopping $2.6 million, coming in twelfth.
