This weekend, “Gravity” became that movie that only comes along so often, one that is beloved by both critics and audiences, becoming a box office success and even breaking records. With a $55.5 million debut, “Gravity” broke the October opening weekend record by a few million. As good word of mouth continues to spread about the film, don’t be surprised if “Gravity”, which is about two astronauts trying to survive after a disaster leaves them stranded in space, is high on the box office charts for several weeks to come.
“Gravity” was followed by last weekend’s number one movie, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2”, which still earned a respectable $21.5 million. The weekend’s only other new wide release, however, “Runner Runner”, did not fare as well. Despite an impressive cast including Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, the thriller debuted in third with only $7.6 million.
And, oddly enough, another Spanish-language comedy debuted this weekend to great box office success. With the surprise hit “Instructions Not Included” still in the top 12, this weekend “Pulling Strings” opened in just under 400 theaters with an impressive $2.5 million, coming in ninth.
