Weekend box office: evil reigns as 'Maleficent' takes top spot from 'X-Men'

Disney found a big hit with a live-action reincarnation of one of its classic animated tales. “Maleficent”, which tells the story of “Sleeping Beauty” from the villain’s point of view, was one of this summer’s most anticipated movies. The film, which stars Angelina Jolie in the title role, grossed $70 million this weekend, knocking last weekend’s number one movie, “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, down to second with $32.6 million.

This weekend’s other new wide release, Seth MacFarlane’s western spoof “A Million Ways to Die in the West”, had a hard time keeping up with the competition. The raunchy comedy was likely too vulgar to appeal to as wide an audience as “Maleficent” did, while critics widely panned it. The movie still debuted in third, but with just $17.06 million.

Meanwhile, the indie movies “Belle” and “Chef” continue to do well at the box office as they expand to more theaters. “Chef” remained in ninth this weekend, while “Belle” jumped to eleventh.
