Weekend box office: 'Chronicle' and 'The Woman in Black' go head-to-head

This weekend, the box office faced a close race between new releases “Chronicle” and “The Woman in Black”.  In the end, it was “Chronicle” that ended up on top, but not by much.  The found footage film about a trio of teenagers who gain superpowers grossed $22 million.  “The Woman in Black”, a classically-made horror film whose star—Daniel Radcliffe, fresh off the “Harry Potter” series—likely drew in audiences, followed in second with $21 million.

Unusually, despite favorable reviews and its family-oriented content, the weekend’s other new wide release, “Big Miracle”, didn’t perform nearly as well.  The film, which stars John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore as a reporter and activist who work to free a family of whales trapped under ice, debuted in fourth with only $8.5 million, right behind last weekend’s number one movie (and another one set near the Arctic), “The Grey”.

The complete list of the top 12 movies at the box office this weekend is below.
