Weekend box office: 'Captain America' soars with record-breaking numbers

To say that “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was a success this weekend would be an understatement. The sequel to Marvel’s “Captain America”, which introduced the First Avenger, debuted with $96.2 million this weekend. That not only sets new April records, but it’s also almost twice as high a gross as its predecessor’s debut was—an impressive feat that likely owes a lot to 2012’s “The Avengers”, which Captain America appeared in alongside other popular Marvel heroes. It doesn’t hurt that “The Winter Soldier” is getting rave reviews, with many citing it as the greatest Marvel movie yet.

Fortunately, no other movies had to go up against “Captain America” this weekend, as that was the only new wide release. Last weekend’s number one movie, the Biblical epic “Noah”, dropped to second with $17 million.
