Weekend box office: 'Captain America' is on top again as 'Transcendence' flops

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was the number one movie at the box office this Easter weekend, fending off some new releases that didn’t fare so well. The Marvel superhero sequel grossed $26.6 million, making this the third weekend in a row that it has claimed the top spot. Last weekend’s number two movie, “Rio 2”, also stayed in second this weekend with $22.5 million.

Heaven is for Real” was the surprise success of this weekend’s new nationwide releases. The drama, which is based on the true story of a boy who claims he went to heaven after having a near-death experience, opened in third with $21.5 million. The most anticipated movie of the weekend was “Transcendence”, a sci-fi thriller starring Johnny Depp. Apparently Depp’s popularity wasn’t enough to drag people to the theater to see it though; it grossed only $11.1 million, coming in fourth.

Rounding out this weekend’s new releases was the parody “A Haunted House 2”, which came in fifth with $9.1 million, and the Disneynature documentary “Bears”, which debuted in eleventh with $4.7 million.
