Weekend box office: 'Captain America' barely wins battle with 'Rio 2'

Last weekend’s smash hit “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was number one at the box office again this weekend, but it had to fight hard to get there. While “Captain America” was the sole new release last weekend, this week there were several new film to go up against it, including the family-friendly “Rio 2”, a sequel to the 2011 animated hit “Rio”. That movie opened with a strong $39 million, falling in second behind “Captain America”’s $41.3 million.

Oculus”, the well-reviewed horror movie starring Karen Gillan of “Doctor Who” fame debuted in third with $12 million, not bad for an R-rated film. “Draft Day”, however, had a mediocre performance. The sports drama starring Kevin Costner as the manager of the Cleveland Browns opened in fourth with only $9.7 million.

This is the third weekend that the action movie “The Raid 2” has been in theaters, but the first one where it expanded to an almost nationwide release, boosting the film into eleventh with $1.01 million.
