Weekend box office: audiences warm up to zombie rom-com 'Warm Bodies'

With the “Twilight” series over, teenage girls are looking for a new franchise to fall in love with. Could “Warm Bodies” be the start of a new fandom? The romantic comedy that follows a zombie who falls in love with a human girl was a hit at the box office this weekend—usually a slow one for movies because of the Super Bowl—coming in first with $19.5 million. It’s also receiving solid reviews from critics, so even though a sequel hasn’t yet been announced, it wouldn’t be surprising if something is in the works.

Last weekend’s number one movie, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters”, dropped to second with $9.2 million. This weekend’s other big new release, “Bullet to the Head”, didn’t stand a chance against “Warm Bodies”. Despite starring action legend Sylvester Stallone, the film failed to gain an audience, debuting in sixth with $4.5 million. And even though it was only out in limited release this weekend, another movie with an all-star cast—the crime drama “Stand Up Guys”, starring Christopher Walken, Al Pacino, and Alan Arkin—didn’t come close to cracking the top 12. That movie came in seventeenth with $1.5 million.
