There were lots of new movies in theater last week for Valentine’s Day, but there can only be one box office winner. Most moviegoers decided to take their dates to see “A Good Day to Die Hard”. The fifth film in the franchise starring Bruce Willis as police officer John McClane took the top spot this weekend with $25 million (it made over $33 million including Thursday). That’s not bad, but not quite as successful as its predecessor, “Live Free or Die Hard”, which took in $38 million its 4-day opening weekend.
It also didn’t win the weekend by much. The comedy “Identity Thief”, which was the number one movie last weekend, was successful again this weekend, coming in second with $23.4 million. It was followed by the rest of the weekend’s new releases. The romantic Nicolas Sparks drama “Safe Haven” debuted in third with $21.4 million, followed by the animated comedy “Escape from Planet Earth”. That movie made $16.6 million, its success likely due to the lack of any other kids’ movies in theaters right now.
“Beautiful Creatures” was the least successful new releases. Hyped as the next “Twilight”, the teen romance mixed with witchcraft set in the South came in sixth, only making $7.4 million. It was beat by “Warm Bodies”, another teen romance involving zombies.
