Weekend box office: Apes win battle with Transformers

Genetically-enhanced apes took down Transformers at the box office this weekend, as “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” became the number one movie with $73 million. That’s almost $20 million more than its predecessor, the first installment of a new reboot of the nearly fifty-year-old franchise, made a couple years ago. Being the only new wide release this weekend, it also didn’t have much competition. “Transformers: Age of Extinction”, meanwhile, dropped to second with $16.5 million.
