Weekend box office: 'Act of Valor' leads over Tyler Perry

This weekend saw the release of several new movies at the box office, but it was “Act of Valor” that took the top spot with a respectable $24.7 million.  The action flick about the war overseas is unique in that it stars real-life Navy SEALS, and was surprisingly successful considering the lack of interest in previous films dealing with a similar subject.

Powerhouse filmmaker Tyler Perry’s latest film, the comedy/drama “Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds”, came in second, and although it was no competition for “Act of Valor”, it grossed a decent $16 million.

The weekend’s other two new releases debuted far behind “Act of Valor” and “Good Deeds”.  The R-rated comedy “Wanderlust”, despite starring comedy giants Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, came in eighth with $6.6 million, likely due to poor marketing of the film.  Another new movie that didn’t generate much interest was “Gone”, a thriller starring Amanda Seyfried.  That movie only made $5 million this weekend.
