Weekend activities may be affected by double dose of wintry mix

There are a lot of events and activities planned this weekend in Central Virginia. Many may be postponed or cancelled due to the wintry mix in the weekend forecast.

According to the Weather Channel, the first round of wintry mix will start early on Friday morning and continue until around noon, before changing over to rain.

The second round of wintry mix may roll in around the end of the work day on Friday and continue into the late evening hours, before changing over to rain which will continue for most of Saturday.

The National Weather Service forecast shows a winter weather advisory in effect from 11 p.m. on Thursday until midnight on Friday.

Most area schools are currently scheduled to operate two hours late on Friday, but that may change, depending on the weather.

Some family events scheduled this weekend include an indoor dog show, a horse show, theater productions at local schools, concerts by Jefferson Choral Society and Lynchburg College's orchestra, special events at Amazement Square and the Region III boys basketball finals featuring cross-town rivals Heritage and E.C. Glass.

Friday's events include the ladies only Gathering of Godesses at Amazement Square on Friday from 6-10 p.m. The annual event is raises funds for educational programs in the Lynchburg area. Tickets are available online or by calling Amazement Square.

Dogs on Parade will be held at Bentley Commons, 1604 Graves Mill Road, from 5-7 p.m. The event is free to attend with a small fee to register dogs under 30 pounds to participate. The dog show will be fun for the whole family.

It will be hard to choose between theater productions this weekend at Heritage, E.C. Glass and Forest Middle Schools.

The Pirates of Penzance will hold two final performances on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. at E.C. Glass.

Footloose will begin this weekend at Heritage, with performances at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and a matinee on Sunday at 2 p.m. There will be additional performances next week on Feb. 28, March 1 and March 2. Order tickets for both of these plays at Lynchburg Tickets.

Tickets will be available at the door for the Forest Middle School production of School House Rock Live! Jr. Showtimes are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and there's a 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

The Lynchburg College wind symphony and orchestra will present A Night at the Movies on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Call the college at (434) 544-8344 for free reserve tickets.

Horse lovers will enjoy the early spring open horse show at Sweet Briar College on Saturday. The free show begins at 8 a.m. and continues all day until 5 p.m. at Rogers Riding Center.

Kids can learn about Egyptian culture at Amazement Square from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday. Kids will also create their own hieroglyphic nameplate necklace to take home.

On Saturday night, the Regional III Boys Basketball Final will be held at E.C. Glass at 7:30 p.m. Heritage and Glass will dual to the finish before a packed house.

The Jefferson Choral Society will present Around the World in 80 Minutes at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday at Timberlake United Methodist Church. Tickets are available at Lynchburg Tickets.

There's plenty of action planned around town this weekend. Pick one, pick two or pick a few events to enjoy together this weekend but check to make sure the weather doesn't cause changes or cancellations.
