Week of snow changes complexion of ski season

Snow across the nation in the past week has dramatically increased the amount of available skiing terrain. Particularly in Lake Tahoe ski areas that had to rely almost exclusively on snow guns, new snowfall measured in feet ended months of anticipation and frustration.

Alpine Meadows received 6 feet of snow in 72 hours and neighboring Squaw Valley recorded 5 feet on its upper mountain. After the storms, the two resorts were able to open a combined 1,550 acres, an increase of about 700 percent.

Farther south in the Sierras, Mammoth Mountain was able to open its entire mountain after 55 inches of new snow. In the four days from Jan. 20-23, the resort received more snow that it had during the entire winter up to that point.

Utah ski areas also picked up 4 feet of new snow in four days. In Colorado, Telluride recorded 20 inches of fresh powder.
