This week I had the chance to see two amazing bands fronted by powerful women: My First Earthquake and Angelique Kidjo. I also finally figured out how to use my point and click camera to take semi-decent photos of performers (it's only been years).
Thursday, San Francisco's own My First Earthquake released their new E.P. Crush at the Rickshaw Stop. I love Rebecca Bortman in her sequins, red gloves, red tights and a red scarf. Her dance moves are awesomely dorky and the way she handles heckling is superb. My First Earthquake has become one of my favorite local bands, and I don't use that phrase lightly.
See the video below: a fan-made video. Note: The bee man was at the show and had fully functioning limbs. He was invited up to dance on stage with Bortman in thanks for being hit by a car for the cause of this video. We are grateful.

The Stern Grove Festival kicked off its 2010 season Sunday, June 20th with Angelique Kidjo, fresh from the World Cup's opening celebration in Johannesburg one week ago. Kidjo's most recent album, Oyo, pays tribute to the people who inspired and supported Kidjo to be the musician she is today. She especially thanked her father, who passed away two years ago, for believing in her.
Kidjo threw James Brown's "Cold Sweat," Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" and a Bollywood tune in her musical blender and pumped it out with great energy. She also graced us with the classic "Malaika." It was a great beginning to the summer of 2010.
It's been an inspiring week for powerful for female fronted bands in San Francisco.

Yay for using your camera to get those awesome photos. So what did you try that was different? Was it a framing strategy or some other factor?
Yeay! This time: no flash and set the shutter speed to -2 which is the fastest it can go (sort of the opposite of what I expected) but it works!
Got something to say?
