Examiner Games of the Week
Buford (1-0, 0-0) is No.1 in Class AAA and will travel to City Park Stadium/Bobby Gruhn Field to face Gainesville (1-0, 0-0), the No.1 team in Class AAAAA. Gainesville won last year’s matchup, 19-15.
Gainesville quarterback Deshaun Watson, the state’s career passing leader, racked up 383 yards through the air and had four touchdown passes in the Red Elephants’ 58-28 win against West Forsyth last week. The Wolves defense will try to prevent Watson from becoming Georgia’s first 10,000-yard passer ever, which means holding him to less than 257-yards, in the game. Buford is highly motivated to get some payback after Gainesville knocked them off at home last year, snapping the Wolves’ 43-game home winning streak. Buford had six players score TD’s last week in their 46-7 victory over Elbert County, so they can also light up the score board.
Look for Watson to break the 10,000-yard passing mark in a 3-point loss to Buford.
Norcross (0-1, 0-0) and Parkview (0-1, 0-0) will battle in the Big Orange Jungle. Both teams are coming off losses in their opening games. The Blue Devils of Norcross are looking to rebound from a 55-0 thumping at the hands of Washington HS from Miami, Florida that was televised on ESPN, while the Panthers fell 28-14 to Peachtree Ridge as a result of two fourth quarter interceptions that were returned for scores. Norcross is No.6 in Class AAAAAA; Parkview is unranked in Class AAAAAA. Despite their loss, Norcross should not be written off as they are defending state champions and have 11 seniors that have Division I scholarship offers. Parkview played well in their loss as well against what may be the most improved team in the county, so this will be a back and forth battle early, but the Devils talent is too deep for the Panthers to stay close.
Norcross will bounce back with a 21+ point win over Parkview.
Gwinnett County Matchups
The Berkmar Patriots (1-0, 0-0) will be on the road against the Mustangs of Meadowcreek. Look for Berkmar to win in blowout fashion by at least five TD’s.
Collins Hill (1-0, 0-0) will host Dacula (0-1, 0-0). The Eagles of Collins Hill will beat the Falcons of Dacula by 13.
The Mill Creek Hawks (1-0, 0-0) are home against the Brookwood Broncos (0-1, 0-0). This one will be close to the final horn, but look for Mill Creek to win by a TD.
South Gwinnett (0-1, 0-0) will host Duluth (0-1, 0-0) in what will be one of the more one-sided games of the week. The Comets of South Gwinnett will win by at least four touchdowns over the Wildcats of Duluth
Gwinnett County vs. non-Gwinnett teams
The Archer Tigers (1-0, 0-0) will host the East Coweta Indians (1-0, 0-0). Tigers over the Indians by 6 points.
Central Gwinnett (0-1, 0-0) will visit Clarke Central (0-1, 0-0). Black Knights will fall by 3 points.
Lanier (1-0, 0-0) will host Oconee County (0-1, 0-0), and will win by 21+.
Mountain View (0-1, 0-0) goes on the road to face Pebblebrook (1-0, 0-0), and will take their second loss-this one by 17+.
The Shiloh Generals (1-0, 0-0) will play host to the Redan Raiders from Dekalb County. The Generals will improve to 2-0 with a two touchdown victory.
