Jack Miller, Charlie McKee and Ron Corbin, writers here in the Las Vegas Valley, did a presentation on Saturday, June 22, between one and three pm at the Sunrise Library about the anthology I Pledge Allegiance…
They are former members of law enforcement as well as military veterans and they contributed stories to this tome as did other members of their writers group – Wednesday Warrior Writers, (W3).
During the I Pledge Allegiance…presentation Miller told the story behind this anthology--how a member’s grandson returned from military service in the Middle East only to die in a motorcycle accident. His father, also active military, told about escorting his son’s cremains across the country, the people he met, the respect he was shown and how he felt the presence of his son during the entire trip. Miller went on to say that the group member, Meryl Savage, shared that story with the members of W3, and shortly thereafter passed away. The group decided to do the anthology in her memory and donate the author royalties to an organization that serves our military heroes. Their publisher, Houdini Publishing, has also contributed to the donations.
Corbin, a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot with over 2500 combat flight hours in Viet Nam, told of his surviving a helicopter crash while flying for the Los Angeles Police Department. His partner was killed and he suffered extensive second and third degree burns. Corbin has gone on to other careers and now volunteers his time at the local USO at McCarran International Airport here in Las Vegas, one of only five in the country that are open on a 24/7 basis. He presented the USO to the Wednesday Warriors Writers as a charity that serves our military and their families to the . The W3 members unanimously agreed to donate their royalties to the Las Vegas USO.
McKee talked about the special people he has met during his lifetime and how much it meant to him to write about them and contribute his stories to I Pledge Allegiance... He also spoke about what a nice group of people he currently writes with and shares his work with. He advised the attendees to do something for someone--tell a family history so it isn’t lost. Write about someone who influenced their lives. Then take the time to share that story with someone else.
I Pledge Allegiance.. is available on Amazon and locally from Houdini Publishing. The cost is $14.95. The book contains 50 short stories about some of the most patriotic and heroic people. Once you start reading it you won’t be able to put the book down, and remember all the author royalties go to the Las Vegas USO.
