Joseph Alpar and his band David's Harp will perform their Turkish flavored Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish music 7:00 PM Wednesday evening September 1, 2010 at Elebash Recital Hall, CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue, at 34th Street in Manhattan. Admission $5 (cash or check), free with CUNY ID.
David’s Harp is an ensemble specializing in music from Turkey, Greece, the Balkans, Azerbaijan, North Africa, and the Middle East. Led by Joseph Alpar, the group is devoted to performing the music of Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish communities from around the world with a focus on revealing cultural and religious interactions through music. With repertoire drawn from Ottoman court music, Sufi devotional songs, Rebetika and Ladino genres among others, the fluidity and blending of diverse musical ideas between Jewish and non-Jewish worlds is demonstrated through the music of David’s Harp. In the spirit of peace and friendship, David’s Harp is dedicated to keeping this rich artistic heritage of musical exchange alive. Musicians include: Joseph Alpar (Director, santouri, darbuka, vocals),Brenda Alpar ( keyboard, zills), Cynthia Folio (flute), Duane Large (guitar, mandolin, bass), Negin Moshtagh (daf), and Sergei Panov (violin).
