Wedding lingerie: We asked the experts

For a bride-to-be, buying your wedding day (and night) lingerie is an important part of the planning process.  When it comes to wedding day wear, it all starts with buying your wedding gown, of course, but soon after it’s time to work on your intimate apparel.

We talked to several women in the wedding planning industry to get their top tips and advice on the topic of brides-to-be and lingerie. Here’s what the experts had to say:

  • I advise my brides that there is a difference between wedding lingerie and bridal lingerie. Wedding lingerie is for the wedding night or honeymoon, while bridal lingerie pieces function as support garments for the actual day. It’s important to find a garment that compliments your wedding attire in color, is supportive, and makes you feel beautiful. Think seamless, smooth and comfortable.  I often even go shopping with my brides to be sure they find the right item for them. – Apryl D. Roberts, MemorableEventsbyApryl.com

  • As a wedding planner, I tell my brides to keep in mind you have never worn a gown like this before in your life. Truly. If you don’t think you need the proper undergarments, you may want to think again. – Stacey Halstead, CreateTheMoment.com
  • Make sure you can breathe. I had a bride decide to wear a corset under her gown in Jamaica and she fainted. They had to rip her wedding dress a bit to get to the corset to help her breathe properly. Of course you want to look good, but be sure it’s comfortable.  Candice “Candy” Cain, CandyCainTravel.com
  • Sometimes it's beneficial to have everything built-in. It can be more comfortable to have a bra or corset inserted/sewn-into the dress than to worry about straps showing or everything lining up right. Oftentimes this means buying an item to literally be sewn in and othertimes the dress comes with this itme already a part of it. Regardless, be sure to visit a local lingerie store and be fitted by an expert bra fitter. Plus, [during your visit] you can pick out something for your honeymoon or wedding night while you are at it! – Tanya Porter, WeddingsByTanya.com
  • We work with many Indian brides and for them we recommend a padded bra because their outfits tend to be so heavy they need some padding. Most of our brides match the color of the lingerie with their outfits. Also, we highly suggest not wearing the bra or bustier for the first time on your wedding day. Wear it a few times to break it in and get used to how it fits and feels. Lastly, keep double sided tape on hand for the day, just in case.  - Nikki and Madi Khan, http://www.exquisevents.com/http://www.exquisevents.com/
  • One of my top tips for strapless dresses is to go into the dressing room by yourself with the dress on, hands over your head and jump up and down like you are dancing to a super fast song and see where the dress goes. If you are constantly pulling up the stress, then it’s not fitting properly with the undergarments you have on. The undergarments should help the dress stay in place.  – Carol Rosen, PartyDesignsByCarol.com.
  • Take your dress along with you, if possible, when shopping for your wedding day [bridal] lingerie. If that isn’t possible, be sure to find out the store’s return or exchange policy in case things don’t match up when you get home. Also, be sure to treat yourself to a proper bra fitting – you deserve it!  – Treacle Tart, LingerieAddict.com
