You still have the opportunity to pay a visit to the Western Reserve Historical Society's special exhibit entitled "Tying the Knot: Cleveland Wedding Fashions, 1830 -1980" featuring an extensive collection of wedding attire worn by Cleveland brides over the course of 150 years.
"Tying the Knot" Running through February 14 in the Chisolm Halle Costume WIng of the Western Reserve Historical Society's History Center, the "Tying the Knot" exhibit spotlights one wedding gown from each decade from 1830 to 1980.
Visitors will be able to learn about each gown in detail and about the women who wore them. In several cases photographs of the brides in their wedding dresses are displayed with the gowns.
The oldest wedding gown in the collection was worn by Janet Frame at her wedding to Dudley Allen in 1837. A 1913 gown worn by a a wealthy Cleveland bride and bought at a salon in New York City was designed by Titanic survivor Lady Duff Gordin.
Visitors may be surprised to see that not all wedding gowns were white. Among some of the gowns in the collection are an 1898 navy blue silk dress, an 1840 gold silk gown, an 1874 gray-green silk-taffeta dress and a shimmering flapper-style 1924 beaded silver lame dress.
Other wedding artifacts in the collection include a display of vests worn by grooms, wedding shoes, hats, boots, fans and bonnets and items from a bride's trousseau like nightwear, undergarments, slips, corsets and bustles.
Visitors can also see items like wedding invitations, bride dolls, gift registries, garters, bride paper dolls, old photographs, cake toppers and a souvenir cake box from Grover Cleveland's wedding in 1886.
And make sure you don't miss the dazzling display of modern day wedding gowns (1981-2013) (presented by Catans Bridal Fashions) in the Bingham-Hanna Drawing Room adjacent to the Costume Wing.
Hours for the Western Reserve Historical Society are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon - 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Historical Society is closed on Monday.
Admission is $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and $5 for students (3-17). Children 2 and under are free. There is a $5 parking fee.
