The word heard around all three fall football scrimmages should have been offense this week as Utah State, Utah and Weber State gear up for the end of two-a-days and fall camp and prepare for their season openers.

Utah State and Utah had productive scrimmages, but Weber State did not. Recently crowned with a preseason No. 19 FCS ranking, the Wildcats suffered through an abysmal scrimmage on Saturday.

Walter Payton Award candidate and quarterback Cameron Higgins may have had a nice day in terms of his numbers (11-for-22, 129 yards passing), but that’s not talking about the interception he threw on the first series of the day.

The surprise on offense actually came from freshman running back Alema Key. The Springville native blasted off for a 56-yard run that set up the only touchdown, also scored by the freshman. It was a good day for Key--with 5 carries for 86 yards--but not for the rest of the offense.

“Except for one nice drive, the offense was basically non-productive. It baffles me because over the last couple of days, they had been moving the ball very well.
We took a couple of steps backwards, so I will look at the film and determine what we need to do to correct it,” Weber State head coach Ron McBride said.

With three interceptions between three quarterbacks--sophomore Mike Hoke (5-for-6 passing, 42 yards) and freshman Jordan Adamcyk (2-for-7 for 30 yards)--the wide receivers saw some of the ball, but not as much as they or McBride would have liked during the 75-play scrimmage.

Three freshmen led the Wildcats at wideout, including 6-foot-4 target Jordan Clemente (3 catches for 43 yards) as well as Shaydon Kehano and Erik Walker, who also hauled in three passes.

Redshirt freshmen led the day in tackles for Weber State, as linebacker Anthony Morales and cornerback Willie Owkuonu had eight and five, respectively. Utah transfer Maurice Neal stepped right in at linebacker as well, with three good hits.

The Wildcats continue two-a-days all week leading up to the final scrimmage Saturday, August 21.
