Weber State basketball: Davion Berry to take different career path than Lillard

As a part of another, perhaps less cluttered draft class, former Weber State men's basketball guard Davion Berry may have been chosen by an NBA team in rounds one or two--thus ensuring his arrival in the greatest basketball league in the world.

Life didn't go that way for Berry, who wasn't drafted this summer in a class that was filled with potential superstars. And so he will have to prove himself overseas.

The 6-foot-4-inch guard out of Oakland, Calif. signed a deal recently to play for Italian club PMS Torino, which plays its basketball in the A2 Gold Basket Series League, a second-tier professional league.

Had Berry been in the same situation, or one similar, as top college players in other draft classes, you might be talking about Berry in the same light as Damian Lillard--a former Wildcat star who is now an All-Star and Olympic hopeful with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Berry--who is a great shooter who should thrive in a perimeter-happy European game--did play for the Blazers' summer league entry in Las Vegas several weeks ago.

He did not particularly impress anyone there, playing in just three games--out of five Portland played in the tournament--scoring a paltry 0.7 points per contest.

When you compare Berry's rather underwhelming summer league numbers to those he posted at Weber State, you begin to realize in some small way that his best course of action might be to play overseas, get some seasoning over there, and try his luck in the NBA in a year or two.

To be fair, though, Berry didn't get many looks in Vegas. He took two field goal attempts, making one--and attempted just one three-point shot, which he missed.

The basket that Berry did make, however, came against the Utah Jazz in the state where he played college basketball. Might it be a small sign of things to come? Everyone will have to wait and see. In the meantime, Berry is going to Italy.
