Webb Simpson can relate to Malcolm Smith’s post-game intrusion

Webb Simpson may have experienced a bit of deja vue if he tuned into Sunday night's post-game press conference featuring Malcolm Smith, Seahawks linebacker and MVP of Super Bowl XLVIII.

No doubt, facing Peyton Manning and the NFL's best-ever offense did not frighten Smith nearly so much as the 9/11 conspiracy theorist who jumped onto the podium during the Seattle player’s presser.

Ripping the microphone from Smith, who made a trio of huge plays in Seattle's 43-8 dismantling of the Broncos, the guy with a press pass around his neck yelled, "Investigate 9/11, 9/11 was perpetrated by our own government," before security hauled him away.

Golf fans may recall a similar occurence during the closing ceremonies of the 2012 U.S. Open, when a self-described environmental activist who goes by the handle "Jungle Bird" interrupted Bob Costas' crowning of Simpson as the winner of that season’s second major.

Simpson, with a post-Open Twitter post, upped the notoriety of the British Birdman, who had squawked his way onto many a dais with his anti-deforestation message.

"My new friend," @webbsimpson1 tweeted, with an accompanying photo of his intruder, on June 18, 2012.

While the USGA decided not to book the colorfully clad, bird-calling Brit, New Jersey’s finest charged the Super Bowl crasher, identified by UPI as 30-year-old Matthew Mills, with trespassing and released him, according to the Chicago Tribune.
