Longtime "Good Morning America" weather anchor Sam Champion made an announcement recently that will change the show going forward. Champion, 52 has accepted an offer from NBC owned The Weather Channel to host his own show which will be the network's flagship program and serve as managing editor. The shake up couldn't have come at a more precarious time for ABC. The network is still riding a massive high of being declared the ratings winner for the 2012-2013 TV season. After more than 19 years, "GMA" managed to topple the the ratings powerhouse "Today". For more than a year "GMA" has held the lead in part thanks to the ensemble cast that ABC News put together which includes Champion.

Champion is expected to move to the Atlanta area where The Weather Channel is based. It's ironic that Champion's new show trails his NBC rival Al Roker's. The weather rivals now work for the same company, will the new addition be a smooth transition?

Meanwhile, with Champion's final appearance on "GMA" on Wednesday, ABC is probably working overtime to secure the right replacement to make sure they maintain their ratings lead over "Today". However there are reports that other members of the "GMA" cast are in negotiations and may seek to capitalize on their recently ratings victory as well as Champions departure.

Champion anchored ABC's "Good Morning America" for seven years. In 2012 Champion married Brazilian artist Rubem Robierd.
