If it were not for the resurgence of drought in Texas, our weather would be looking pretty good in comparison to the rest of the nation. A weak cold front may briefly provide, after its passage, a chance for Houston to have a nice midweek with lower dewpoints and a cursory drop in temperature. But a stronger storm upstream (now advancing through the West Coast) should reverse the wind fields again, with increasing warmth and humidity. So while subfreezing temperatures and heavy snow advance through the Front Range into the Missouri Valley, the Lone Star State has a reasonable chance of again reaching the 90 degree mark on Friday and Saturday.
I suspect that the weekend storm complex will be a big severe weather producer in much of the Old South (between the I-20 and I-10 corridors east of the Sabine River to the Georgia/Florida shoreline). This feature could produce a shield of heavy wet snow and cold stratiform rain in a belt from Kansas and Nebraska into the Great Lakes. As for our chances to see important rainfall, at this point no better than a 50/50 risk with thunderstorms forming nearby to the north and east of the Bayou City. The cold air wrapping behind the system will be modified when it reaches the western Gulf Coast. That said, we should experience about three chilly nights early next week, with our next solid chance at rain occurring around Easter Sunday.
