Weather, circumstances, happiness

It all depends how you look at it.

August at last and high hopes for some summer weather at last.

Apparently, it was the coldest July in San Diego for 100 years. Astounding! (And probably pretty disappointing for vacationers and locals alike.)

Seems the proverbial June-Gloom lingered endlessly – a bit like the Gulf Oil Spill. The oil spill has messed with beaches and landscape while destroying birds, fish, wildlife etc. All this in spite of optimist’s high hopes, and scientists’ attempts…although it looks like a solution might be on hand.

This tragedy has caused two distinct reactions:

*apathetic optimism – “Oh, don’t worry, it’ll all work out just fine in the end. This is just history and nature doing its thing.”

*alarm and panic – “We’re doomed. There is no hope.”

However you dice it, happiness cannot be rooted in weather, vacations, or landscape. Too precarious. Lasting happiness is rooted in truth not in circumstance. And truth is displayed in God’s Word, the Bible. Therein lie answers – at least as many answers as God has chosen to disclose to mere mortals at this time.

Jesus said, Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Isaiah 24:35).

In another Bible passage, God sends out an invitation to freedom:

“Come, all you who are thirsty,

       come to the waters;

and you who have no money,

       come, buy and eat!

       Come, buy wine and milk

       without money and without cost.

Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? ?

Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.

Give ear and come to me; ?       hear me, that your soul may live” (Isaiah 55:1-3).

The answer to mankind’s thirst, his need, is to hear God speak. He speaks through His Word.

His voice calms the fears, soothes away the sorrows, directs our paths and leads us into the purpose He’s prepared for us. His voice brings peace

“…so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace (Isaiah 55:11 & 12).

Now that the sun’s out, it might be high time to take more time with the Son—God’s Son.
