As The Weather Channel tracks Winter Storm Helen, network officials announced a major milestone on Jan. 15. Consumers have downloaded The Weather Channel application for smartphones and tablets more than 100 million times. The popular app remains the No. 1 weather app, as well as one of the top overall apps on mobile and tablet devices such as iPhone, iPad, Android and more. The 100-million milestone is attributed to the company’s continued development efforts, innovations and response to severe weather throughout 2012.

An increase in downloads was seen during notable 2012 weather events, such as an unseasonably warm “winter-less” winter, a series of early-onset and continued deadly tornado outbreaks, months of record heat, a historic drought, widespread wildfires, Hurricane Isaac in August and Hurricane Sandy in October.
The Weather Channel mobile and tablet apps continue to be the best resources during severe weather, as consumers continue to choose TWC as the best source of information during these times. This monumental milestone solidifies The Weather Company as a top digital company with an unparalleled audience size.
In addition to reaching this incredible milestone, The Weather Channel is also busy tracking Winter Storm Helen. On Tuesday morning, the named storm wrecked havoc in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, dropping a mix of sleet and snow, accompanied by lightning, in the area. Freezing rain and sleet are spreading to portions of Louisiana and Arkansas throughout Tuesday afternoon. Ice storm warnings continue for parts of the Mid-South region just plagued by light ice accumulations on Monday. This includes the city of Memphis. Helen is expected to move to the north and drop dangerous ice and snow in the Northeast Wednesday night into Thursday.
