February is American Heart Month.
Wear red on February 3 to celebrate National Wear Red Day and make it your mission to fight heart disease in women.
Lorri Alexander is a friend of mine. I had not seen her in 10 years but had heard she had a heart attack almost two years ago. I caught up with her to talk about this. She is now 58 and very active after having been chosen as one of six Go Red for Women in Massachusetts. She told me that one of the biggest changes in her life has been to make exercise a priority in her life.
The Women’s Workout Company is located at 865 Attucks's Lane, in Hyannis, MA. This is Lorri’s gym of choice and where she has and will organize a fundraiser and awareness program on February 4, 2012.
Workout for a Cause is from 10:00am to 11:30am on Saturday. It is sponsored by the American Heart Association. You can enjoy a 90-minute workout to benefit heart disease, stroke victims, and all heart related ailments. There will be raffles, a silent auction, and giveaways. There is a donation of at least $20.00.
Lorri lives in West Yarmouth, MA. Go Red for Women's mission is to create awareness about heart disease and its prevention in women. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. Go Red for Women's fundraising efforts support the educational programs that the American Heart Association provides and the life-saving research it funds to reduce the effects of heart disease in women.
Lorri was one of the lucky ones. In spite of ignoring the warning signs, which can be very different in women then in men, she got to the hospital in time and now makes it her mission to make sure other women do not ignore the signs. She continued shopping; she didn’t want to leave her groceries in a wagon in the store; and her husband drove her to the hospital once she got home. She did all the wrong things. It is a bad idea for one person to drive you to the hospital because that person will be driving if you need CPR. Don't hesitate to call 911. If it is a false alarm, then you were lucky. If it wasn't, then you made the right choice. You can read more about Lorri and Go Red for Women here.
At the Go Red website, you can take a heart checkup; find out why the red dress the symbol of women and heart disease and why Go Red for Women targets women instead of men and women.
