"We will remember each rescuer who died in honor"

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children. “ - President George W. Bush, November 11, 2001

On September 11, 2001, the lives 2973 American lives were taken in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania in a terrorist attack. Most Americans remember that day, they remember what they were doing, where they were, who they were with.

I was at work in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I recall walking down the hallway past the lunchroom while the TV was airing an eerie site. I didn't know what it was, so I stopped to watch. It looked like a terrible accident that caused a passenger plane to crash into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. But then the second plane, only seventeen minutes later, crashed into the south tower and suspicions grew as other co-workers gathered into the room. Shortly after that, news of the Pentagon being struck in the same manner and then the downing of the plane in Pennsylvania caused the newscasters to begin to confirm our own fears.

On Sunday September 11, the tenth anniversary of the attack, Calvary Assembly of God in Orlando will commemorate the day with a special service at 10:30am. The service will remember and pay tribute to those who lost their lives as a result of 9/11, as well as honor those who currently serve as first responders in our community or with our armed forces around the world.

A Flag Garden on the church grounds will honor each of those who lost their lives in the tragedy with 2973 American flags. "In the center of the flag garden, there is a cross prominently displayed to replicate the cross that currently stands in the rubble at ground zero," Rebecca Darling, Brand and Marketing Director for Calvary Assembly of God said.

Those attending are also encourage to tour the garden where they will be a section set up to write a note on a piece of ribbon and tie it on a section of the fence.

Immediately following the service, a community cookout will take place at 12:30pm, complete with food and snow cones for purchase,  games and music.

"The purpose of this day is to never forget [September 11] but to also celebrate life and to make a difference one person at a time," Darling explained.

Calvary Assembly of God is located at 1199 Clay Street, Winter Park, FL 32789 and the offices can be reached at 407-644-1199.
