In my last Article, "We don't need terrorists to destroy us. We're doing it ourselves", I received a number of comments from readers. One reader simply commented, "Your writings are appreciated", while another writer stated, "to the contrary, we HAVE terrorists destroying us, it's a District of Criminals". I am assuming the reader is correctly referring to DC (District of Columbia) as District of Criminals!
A third reader stated "I'm thinking you're mistaken about 'terrorists' as about all branches of government use terrorism on a daily basis… if you don't like what they do they're ready to call YOU a 'terrorist'". A fourth reader says, "all those who are coming to America are only coming here for the free social programs", which I believe is a false understanding of why people risk all just for the opportunity to become successful…and a large percentage achieve success…just look around at what they have accomplished.
Because writers don't have an unlimited forum to write a complete dissertation on any one subject, when we get to the subject regarding the problems of this country, I have to break it down into a number of different articles. Perhaps if they want the full-monty in one fell swoop, they'll be able to read it as part of my new book once I get it completed. Until then we'll have to address these complex issues one step at a time. I'm in agreement with the first three of those who took the time to respond and I think you'll see I am headed in that direction myself.
We've all seen the lapdog media, you know the ones I'm talking about, they continue to support the failed policies of those in DC disparaging anyone or any group that dares to differ or object. As enablers they are quick to label those in opposition as "racists" because the president is not white. Personally, I don't care if President Obama is green with blue spots…his policies have kept our economy in the ditch of the longest and slowest recession-recovery in recorded history. The Obama-Clinton (as Secretary of State) dog-and-pony-show, hasn't done a thing about American stature around the world and in fact I would venture to says 90+ percent of the population would agree it has gotten much worse. Want to argue that point…fine, but just name one country where our relationship has improved!
A common phrase many in opposition to current policies like to use is that "Washington DC is broken", or "Washington is out-of-touch with the needs of the country". The media loves to pigeon-hole everyone with a legitimate opinion as being archaic or themselves out-of-touch. This is particularly true of any Republican, but with Republicans the media always throws in the added slam that "they are extremists". It's hard for me to believe that anyone in the Republican Party or for that matter the Democrat Party could be viewed as archaic and out of touch with the American people as the public's view of all of Congress is at an all-time low…almost as low as the public's perception of used car salesmen!
Speaking of the public attitude regarding the complete disregard of Washington (in general) to the will of the people, there are still many uninformed citizens (thank God many don't bother to vote) who need to be led by the hand to see what is obvious to those of us who are involved in trying to right our ship of state. As the short recap below will illustrate facts don't lie but I am sure the facts will not go unchallenged by those with their heads in the sand or buried where the sun doesn't shine:
The actual approval rating of Congress by the voters is only 15 %. This means 85% of Americans disapprove of the job Congress is doing, but do they listen? Hardly! Forget one party or the other, they are all in their sewer together. To make matters worse, they are propped up by an uninformed and apathetic voter block who believe Congress, which has nearly spent the country into oblivion, has the ability to solve our nation's problems. 90% get re-elected year after year and the idiots that continue to put them in office expect different results…That my friends is the height of stupidity!
About 1% of all Americans are millionaires, but roughly 46% of those serving in Congress are worth at least a million. There's nothing wrong with being rich. But there is a problem when the people creating tax and economic policy fail to understand the financial stress a typical family faces. Additionally, it's all of our elected officials who pass laws, rules, and regulations by the thousands, and then exempt themselves from having to be governed by those same edicts. Again, don't believe me? The perfect example is Obamacare, mandated for all of us, BUT the politicians and federal employees have opted out or receive special taxpayer support to pay for their coverage. The unions which thought Obamacare was so great a couple of years ago, now face the realization the only way around compliance is to go to part time jobs like the rest of us! To me, that's justice.
We hear the monthly job reports which the mainstream media tells us is getting better…"the reason why it has to be getting better is because the unemployment rate is down to 7.4%"...right. What they don't tell us is that while new hires went up 180,000 (many in low pay, part-time positions) another 500,000 totally dropped out of the employment market. WE STILL HAVE MORE THAN 20 MILLION workers not working and have gotten on the social services and welfare train with government support. 47 million are on food stamps!
As Nero fiddled while Rome burned, so too do our political elite who ducked out of Washington DC for a "well-earned vacation" without solving many most urgent issues including: involvement in the Syrian civil war, funding Obamacare, the federal budget deadline, further investigations into Benghazi, IRS scandal, Security eavesdropping on US citizens, the Veterans Administration backlog of claims, tapping into the vast energy potential spearheaded by oil shale reserves across the county, unlocking the job potential by removing the rules and regulations causing uncertainty and strangulation of the small business owner, and countless other debacles tattooed on the butts of every politician in Washington. This "well earned vacation" comes on the heels of Congress working only 10 days in January and a 9 day recess in March! Remember, the average politician makes 4-5 times what Joe Six-Pack is making.
78% of Americans favor term limits for everyone in office. That's nearly 8 out of 10…a commanding majority, yet the uninformed voters continue to let the insanity in Washington continue by re-electing 90% of the robber barons every election. The real example of stupidity came at one of the lowest economic times in US history in the 2012 election. Voters voted for more of the same by electing Obama for a second term…Mickey Mouse would have been a better choice. If we couldn't throw the bums out for squandering a record of $16 trillion dollars (accumulated national debt at that moment) of our nation's fiscal resources, part of which was spent on the pipe dreams of Obama as repayment (does Solyndra ring a bell?) to those who elected and restored him in office, then maybe there is little hope of the change needed to put America back to work and the road to prosperity once again. Oh...the debt is now $17 trillion! Way to go Washington!
Congressional salaries will not be lowered nor will any of the many benefits from retirement to health care be touched. In fact, to show lack of support for those doing our country's bidding fighting the wars the politicians always get us in, with President Obama at the helm, the expected 1.8% pay raise to our military has now been cut back to just .5%. Yet the Bimbos in the administration believe it is okay to reward Washington's elite…hold on to your hats my friends, Obama saw fit to give the Washington DC crowd a 0.5% salary increase effective after March 27, 2013 pursuant to Exec. Order No. 13635, 78 Fed. Reg. 3295 (Dec. 27, 2012). Do they deserve it? You be the judge!
With 46 millionaires taking up oxygen in the People's House (Congress) and the rest set-up for life with salaries, benefits, and healthcare benefits most of us can only dream of, giving any of the political elite a pay raise is the height of obscenity!
Members of Congress aided by a "pimp's relationship" with the media refer to their time in office as having “Committed their lives to public service”. The New York Times reported the median net worth of members of Congress increased 15 percent from 2004 to 2010, rising to $913,000. By comparison the average household wealth in the U.S. dropped 15% between 2007 and 2010, and according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Median household wealth declined 39%. Overall, median household net worth decreased by $12,993, or 16%, between 2000 and 2011. Things ain't gettin' better.
Reality is that politicians are in it for the power, money, and are out to grab all they can grab with seemingly little regard to the people they serve. Those who really are the PUBLIC SERVANTS do so generally at great peril. With the exception of the military and paid first responders (police firemen, and similar folks), most commit themselves to public service for the good of their community or nation and do so as volunteer firemen, EMTs, sit on library boards, public service boards for no money. I think that puts things in proper prospective.
As we are at a low point in America's history, I have given up thinking we have bottomed-out, because I am always amazed that those in office keep finding new ways to take us down even more. As Will Rogers said "If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging". I guess they never heard about Will Rogers up there in DC. So, in my next article we'll look at the U.S. Constitution and see what the Founding Fathers and others who have spoken out over the years, all much smarter than me, see how we can deal with the runaway train coming down the track.
