A Daily Word from the Word for Tuesday, January 14, 2014
“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” – 1 John 5:4
What a wonderful and encouraging promise on which to stand! God is rich in promises, and an encourager through His Word. 2 Corinthians 1:20 testifies assuredly of God’s truth in that “all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”
The Greek word for “born” as used in this verse is gennao (pr. ghen-nah-o) which means “conceive, be born, bring forth, regenerate” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). Webster’s Dictionary defines “regenerate” as “formed or created again, spiritually reborn or converted, restored to a better, higher, more worthy state.” When we become reconciled to the Father, by the Blood of the Son, we are restored and recreated to the place, position, and purpose that God originally spoke into us before He placed us in our mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5).
When we submit our will to the Will of our Father, we become as clay in the potter’s hands: “Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something at the wheel. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make” (Jeremiah 18:3-4). God takes our marred condition, puts us back on His wheel, and lovingly remolds us into His perfect image—a perfect vessel which carries His power. It is His power through us which gives us the ability to overcome the world (Zechariah 4:6).
We are empowered, through Jesus Christ, to “overcome” the world; which used here is the Greek word nikao (pr. nik-ah-o) meaning “to subdue, conquer, prevail, get the victory.” Webster defines “subdue” as “to conquer and bring into subjection.” The Psalmist, King David, attests to what the Lord has decreed concerning us: “You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet” (Psalm 8:6). The Creator Himself established us to “rule over the earth and subdue it” (Genesis 1:28).
My brothers and sisters, we have already been given the victory—the nike (pr. nee-kay), which is “conquest, the means of success.” We are made with God’s DNA; therefore, we already have programmed into our spiritual DNA, every strategy for every success in every situation and circumstance. Now this is something to shout about!
“But Brother Matt…” Let me stop your right there, my down-trodden brother, and my disheartened sister. This is God speaking, and I know you are not calling Him a liar. Here is the key, child of the Most High King: “even our faith.” Say that a few times, but personalize it (“even my faith.”).
The Greek word for “even” as used here is kai (pr. kahee) which is “having a copulative, and sometimes a cumulative force.” Faith is progressive, and it is a process. You build faith by constantly exercising it, just like working out. When you want to build muscle, you exercise your muscles. You don’t get the muscles you want on your first trip to the gym; but rather, it requires a process of going and continually working out. Every time you work out, you are building on your previous progress. So it is with building faith: faith produces more faith.
The more you exercise your faith, the more faith you build. The devil will try to get you to stop building your faith, which is why this cowardly lion will bring about discouragement and disappointment; to get you to stop exercising your faith. When something you have been believing God for hasn’t yet come to pass, or something you asked God to do didn’t happen; the lying devil will whisper in your ear “see, God didn’t hear you,” or “you just don’t have the kind of faith that God requires.” You know what, family? Wait for it…here it comes…one of my favorite sayings…the devil is a lie! You tell the devil to go to hell. He’s not there yet, but suggest he make an early reservation, since God is going to put him there permanently in the final hour.
Satan knows that if you keep working through your disappointments; if you keep seeing past the present; if you continue to stand on God’s Word regardless what the circumstances look like; that you will be a force to be reckoned with, because you refuse to stop exercising your faith!
“Faith” used in this verse is pistis (pr. pis-tis) which is “the moral conviction of the truthfulness of God, reliance on Christ for Salvation, the system of Gospel truth itself.” I stand unwaveringly and steadfastly on the truthfulness of God having become his son through the salvation which only comes through Jesus Christ, and so should you. Because every time we do, we give the devil a black eye and a bloody nose.
We need to have the kind of faith that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego possessed. When King Nebuchadnezzar gave them an ultimatum to bow down and worship him or be thrown into the fiery furnace, they bravely refused and said with the moral conviction of the truthfulness of God: “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up” (Daniel 3:17-18).
Did you catch that? They stood on the promises of God, that even if God chose not to deliver them, He still was God. My brothers and sisters, do you want to possess the ultimate faith, the kind of faith that will serve a knock-out punch to the devil every time? The faith that produces the victory to overcome the world? Then get to the place in your walk where you can say, with conviction, and mean it: “God, I trust you, and I believe you, and I am convicted of your truth. And even if you don’t [fill in the blank], Lord, you are still God, and you are still Truth, and I will still bow down and worship you rather than my circumstances.”
Father, thank You that you have given us Your power to overcome the world. We thank you that we are born of You, we are your sons and daughters; and therefore, we possess your spiritual DNA. Father, activate within us this type of faith that is pleasing to You; this type of faith that moves mountains; this type of faith that causes you to get up from Your Mighty Throne—this “even-if-You-don’t’” victorious faith. In Jesus Name, we thank You that we are more than conquerors through You, Who lives within us. Amen and Amen!
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to come out of the restrictive type of faith that puts conditions on God; and instead, flow freely and liberally in His “even-if-You-don’t” faith. Choose to exercise your faith daily, and cumulatively; and refuse to drink the hater-ade flavored Gatorade that the devil is trying to serve you. And continue to fight the good fight of wearing the gloves of faith that deliver the devil a
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
