Notable deaths in history this week.

On April 3, 1933, Wilson Mizner, an American screenwriter, wit, gambler and raconteur, died. Mizner's last words, as he lay on his deathbed with eyes closed and opened them to see a priest hovering over him:

"Why should I talk to you? I've just been talking to your boss."

Deathless Verse for April 3:

God calls, and says it’s time;

It matters not that I’m

Quite unprepared to go—

I’ve not seen all the show.

“There’ll be another one,”

He says, “with lots and lots of fun.”

About his birth, Mizner said, “To my embarrassment, I was born in bed with a lady.”

On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated by James Earl Ray. King’s epitaph:

“"Free at last. Free at last. Thank God Almighty I'm Free At Last."

George Jacques Danton (see picture), French revolutionary was hanged on April 5, 1794. His last words:

“Thou wilt show my head to the people: it is worth showing."

According to a biographer, "Danton's height was colossal, his make athletic, his features strongly marked, coarse, and displeasing; his voice shook the domes of the halls.” He obviously had a big head, too.

Poet Edward Arlington Robinson died on April 6, 1935. He is the poet who wrote this surprise ending to one of his poems:

"And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,

Went home and put a bullet through his head."

Robinson also wrote: "There is a good deal to live for, but a man has to go through hell really to find it out."

P. T. Barnum ("There's a sucker born every minute") died on April 7, 1891. His last words:

"How were the receipts today at Madison Square Garden?"

Deathless Verse for April 7:

There’s a sucker born every minute,

And if there were a trophy, I’d win it.

Pablo Picasso died on April 8 in 1973. His last words: "Drink to me."
