‘Best of the 80s’ is a celebration our favorite decade’s pop culture. As always, your suggestions and comments are welcome below.

Five months later, and Nintendo would have blown it.

Thankfully, though, they had the common sense to drop their excellent new toy just in time for it to be officially considered a product of our favorite decade.

The first Gameboy hit store shelves July 31, 1989, launching a revolution that is still going strong today.

In the pre-Gameboy days, you'll recall, we had to huddle around a computer, bike over to the arcade, or dig out the ol' Atari system. Now, as the commercial said, we could "have all the power and excitement of Nintendo, right in the palm of our hands!"

And what today looks like a pretty lame black and white screen with chunky graphics, well... back then, it was just about the coolest thing going. Directional pad, A button, B button, Select, Start, and a volume dial. That's it, because that's all that was needed... except for the games of course. And the first Gameboy devices came pre-packaged with Tetris (all for just $89.99!), so what's not to love?

Indeed, Nintendo did love the Gameboy, frankly, because we all loved the Gameboy so much. Since its arrival on store shelves, the Gameboy (and the 90s edition- Gameboy Color) have sold close to 150 million units worldwide. The Nintendo DS, the Sony PSP... hell, even the iPhone all have their roots in this one little stellar toy.

No wonder it's only the second electronic/electric toy (along with the Atari 2600) enshrined in the National Toy Hall of Fame.

And no wonder Nintendo pushed so hard to get it on the market before the decade was out.

Frankly, we don't think any other decade could have handled this little bit of hand-held awesomeness.

We ♥ Gameboy.
