When 9-year-old Hannah Robertson asked McDonald's CEO Don Thompson why he didn't offer healthier options for children, his reply was, “We don’t sell junk food, Hannah,” reported Yahoo! Finance on May 29, 2013.
Hannah, who had flown in from British Columbia to attend the annual shareholder meeting with her mother, seemed to have put Don Thompson in his place- the hot seat. Besides the “We don’t sell junk food” response, Thompson also defended the chain from a doctor who asked the brand to stop marketing to children.
After Thompson replied, “We don’t sell junk food,” he went on to say that his own children grew up eating McDonalds. In light of McDonald's often being chided for its part in the rise of obesity, he also defended the fast food chain explaining, “We provide high quality food. We always have; it's real beef, it's real chicken, it's real tomatoes, real lettuce, real fruit, real smoothies, real dairy, real eggs, and we do it in a way that is also affordable,” reported Yahoo!.
After all was said and done and looking back at the “We don’t sell junk food” reply, Hannah Robertson was just glad she had the opportunity to make her position known. She told ABC News, "Well, I got to think about what I was speaking in my mind, and not many people would get to do that.”
