We are the world: 'Songs for Japan' with Lennon track raises $5 million in month

"Songs for Japan," the digital and physical double CD set that begins with a John Lennon track and was rush-released after the devastating Japanese earthquake, has tallied $5 million in sales for the Japanese Red Cross Society in its first month of release, industry sources said Wednesday. Over 500,000 copies in digital and CD versions have been sold to date.

The 38 tracks in the set are led off by John Lennon's "Imagine" and also include songs by U2, Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Eminem, Madonna, Bon Jovi, the Black Eyed Peas, Keith Urban, Pink, Bruce Springsteen, Sade, Justin Bieber, Enya, Elton John, Sting, Norah Jones, Leona Lewis and others.

Last month, the Japanese Red Cross Society received an initial $2 million payment.  Another $3 million was paid to the Japanese Red Cross on Monday. The participating artists, songwriters, music labels and music publishers and iTunes waived all royalties and proceeds for the project.
