We are the champions: The big winners of the 2010-11 MIAA winter sports season

The snow is finally melting, which means spring sports season is just around the corner. But before we trade our basketball sneakers for baseball cleats and our hockey sticks for lacrosse sticks, let's give one more victory lap to the 2010-11 MIAA winter sports champions.

Basketball

Division 1 boys: St. John's Prep defeated St. John's-Shrewsbury, 72-57

  • Steve Haladyna and Pat Connaughton combined for 54 points for the Eagles in the blowout.

Division 2 boys: New Mission defeated Northbridge, 67-57

Division 3 boys: Whitinsville Christian defeated Watertown, 42-36

  • The Crusaders did what seemingly no other team could do this year - stop the state's leading scorer, Marco Coppola (29.9 PPG average, 15 points in the game) - en route to their first title since 2005.

Division 4 boys: Winthrop defeated Cohasset, 58-55

Division 1 girls: Andover defeated Amherst, 61-51

  • Gatorade state player of the year Nicole Boudreau led all scorers with 18 points to give the Golden Warriors the repeat.

Division 2 girls: Arlington Catholic defeated Millbury, 49-28

Division 3 girls: St. Mary's-Lynn defeated Lee, 64-54

Division 4 girls: Hull defeated New Mission, 59-55

  • The Lady Pirates completed an improbable run to the state title despite having no money in the athletic program for the past two years.

Ice hockey

Super 8 boys: Malden Catholic defeated St. John's Prep, 4-3 (OT)

  • Brendan Collier scored the winner in overtime as the Lancers won their first-ever Super 8 title.

Division 1 boys: Marshfield defeated Wakefield, 3-2

Division 2 boys: Tewksbury defeated Franklin, 2-1

  • One of the state's best netminders, Niko Cunha, had 25 saves in the overtime win, the Redmen's first championship since 1995.

Division 3 boys: Marblehead defeated Westfield, 6-3

Division 3A: Groton-Dunstable defeated Holyoke, 3-0

Division 1 girls: Hingham defeated Acton-Boxboro, 3-1

Division 2 girls: Duxbury defeated Fontbonne, 2-1

Wrestling

Division 1 team: Lawrence defeated Springfield Cathedral, 32-26

Division 2 team: North Andover defeated Natick, 32-25

Division 3 team: Triton defeated Holliston, 34-33 (won 8-6 on matches)

103-pound individual: Christian Monserrat, Methuen

112-pound individual: Mike Mui, Hingham

119-pound individual: Paul Sughrue, Methuen

125-pound individual: Matt Buco, Greater Lawrence

130-pound individual: James Carroll, Needham

135-pound individual: James Smith, Natick

140-pound individual: T.J. Crabtree, St. John's Prep
