A large crowd had gathered around Him to hear the words that were to be spoken. Not knowing how they were to be received, they still drew near. Some had heard of His reputation, turning water into wine, healing the blind and sick, raising people from the dead, yet it was not just about the miracles He performed. It was something more that He had to offer. Instead of facing rejection as they expected, Jesus instead offered encouragement and welcomed them to Him.
“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” Luke 15:4-7
At one point we are all lost. Not knowing where we should go, why we are here, what the purpose of this life is. Some of us can spend our whole lives asking these questions, wandering endlessly in search of answers. We are like lost sheep before we know God. Sheep are in need of someone to guide them and protect them from harm. Just like sheep, we can be exposed to the many dangers that surround us, frighten us and keep us from finding our way until we hear the Shepherd calling for us.
Jesus is the shepherd. He comes to find us when we are led astray. Even though we are weary and broken, He rejoices when we are found. All of Heaven rejoices when we chose to accept what He offers to us, a life saved by Grace. He doesn’t just offer us protection and guidance, but an everlasting life with Him. There is nothing that He wouldn’t do to just find one of us who are lost, to bring us back to Him where we belong. He is a loving Shepherd that is always looking for His lost sheep. Are you ready to be found?
