The World Cosplay Summit will be returning to Katsucon for the second year. Last year the convention held in National Harbor, Maryland hosted the finals for the cosplay contest. This year it will see teams competing for a spot at the finals that will be held at Anime Matsuri in Texas. This is the Eastern Regional Qualifier and is the third qualifier to be held in the series. The fourth and final qualifier will also be held at Anime Matsuri.
For the WCS, teams compete in groups of two for a chance to compete at the world finals that are held in Japan. The competition is judged on craftsmanship as well as performance and the team that excels in both areas moves onto the finals.
So far, two teams have advanced to the finals at Anime Matsuri. Group "Doomed Lunch" won the Hawaiian qualifier with their Princess Mononoke skit. Group "Wild Garden Cosplay" won the NDK Mountain qualifier with their Final Fantasy: Dissidia skit. These two automatically advance to the finals, with the runner up teams having the option open to them as well.
The qualifying event will be held on Saturday February 16th in the main events room at Katsucon. Craftsmanship judging will be completed beforehand with just the performances and the results being open to the public.
More information about the WCS can be found on Katsucon's website at: http://www.katsucon.org/wcs/
Katsucon will be held February 15-17 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland and will be the 19th year of the convention.
