Even if the game is an upset for the #2 seed Gaels, it probably won't hurt Gonzaga all that much heading into the true depths of "March Madness." With a win in the finals, the Bulldogs will be undefeated in conference play this season as the look to get a top seed in the NCAA tournament. With a loss, it will be their sole loss on the season in conference play and their third for the season. It may cause them to fall from the top spot in the rankings, but they should still snag a #1 or #2 seed in the Big Dance.
Motivation for an upset for the Gaels comes as they look to eliminate any potential "bubble talk" heading towards the "Big Dance" when "Selection Sunday" arrives this weekend. According to ESPN, Gonzaga coach Mark Few said of the opposing team's potential motivation here:
"We're going to have to match the intensity of our opponent. There's a sense of desperation when you don't know if you're in the (NCAA) tournament."
St. Mary's enters the game with a rather impressive record themselves, boasting just two losses in the conference and five overall. However, in their two previous meetings with Gonzaga they lost 83-78 away and then 77-60 at home. Will the third time be a charm for the Gaels?
