Just because the NHL cancelled their Winter Classic, which was scheduled for New Year’s Day in Detroit, doesn’t mean there won’t be an outdoor hockey game. The AHL is putting on their own form of the Winter Classic between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the Hershey Bears in Hershey, Pennsylvania on January 20.
Simply titled, the “Outdoor Classic,” the festivities will also include an alumni game between former members of each squad. Among those playing for the Penguins will be Jonathan Filewich, Dennis Bonvie, Jesse Boulerice, Joel Laing, and Martin Sonnenberg. Alumni for the Capitals’ affiliate include Christian Matte, Gary Inness, Louis Robitaille, Nick Kypreos, and Bruce Richardson. The alumni game between the Bears and Penguins will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 19 at Hersheypark Stadium.
Currently, the Penguins sit tenth in the Eastern Conference with a record of 17-17-2, equaling thirty-seven points. The Bears are seventh in the Eastern Conference with forty points and a 19-17-1 season record. In their most recent meeting on January 11, the Penguins defeated the Bears on the back of a 1-0 shutout by Brad Thiessen. Thiessen stopped all twenty-three of the Bears’ shots. The lone goal was scored by Brian Dumoulin.
The puck will drop at for the Outdoor Classic at 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 20 at Hersheypark Stadium. Tickets are still available, and packages include tickets to both the alumni game and Outdoor Classic. In addition to admission to both games over the weekend, packages also include a Hersheypark day pass valid through July 4, 2013.
