The 2014 home season for the St. Louis Park boys soccer team began Saturday afternoon with a rematch of the 2013 Section 6AA semifinals against the Wayzata Trojans as Clayton Smith and Ethan Tuch scored two goals apiece to lead the Trojans to a 5-1 over the Orioles.
It was the second straight win for Wayzata over St. Louis Park. Last season the Trojans ended the Orioles season in the Section 6AA semifinals.
It looked like the Oriole defense was going to shine in the early going as junior goalkeeper Eric Hendricks made an outstanding save on the left side of the net on a shot from Jason Lehman. But it was Clayton Smith who would put the Trojans on the board. They would go up by two as Max Martin, positioning himself on the right side of Hendricks, headed in a corner kick from Lewis O'Connor. Wayzata was not done as Tuch found an opening and score 2:30 later and put another one into the next to give the Trojans a four goal halftime lead.
St. Louis Park would not let Wayzata shut them out in the second half when Maxwell Kent lined one past Trojan goalkeeper Troy Louwagie. Wayzata would wrap the scoring :35 later on Smith's second goal.
The Trojans increased their record to 2-0 and will host the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars Tuesday, August 27 at 7:30 PM. The Orioles fell to 1-1 and host the Minneapolis South Tigers on Monday, August 25 at 7 PM. The game will be proceeded by the varsity girls home opener against the Tigers at 5 PM.
Pat Hartman is the new assistant coach for St. Louis Park, replacing Kevin McLaughlin.
